Introduction

Titanium is lighter than most metals but expensive. Titanium cookware comprises of cooking vessels or food preparation containers made of special alloys that do not melt easily. Certain types of titanium alloys specifically coalesced with aluminum form very high electric resistance, low heating capacity and generate heat effectively under a high frequency magnetic field. These unique features make this cookware extremely attractive, even though titanium itself is not a good conductor of heat.

Titanium cookware heats faster and because of its greater strength it permits the use of thinner materials. This results in cookware that takes less energy to heat and is extremely light to carry, making titanium an ideal choice for hikers and trekkers. For ounce-counting trekkers with a bit of cash to spare, featherweight titanium pots cannot be beat. But plan on keeping a close eye on the cooking process since heat transference is 'fast and furious' enough to make Vin Diesel feel second-rate. Additionally, titanium utensils meet the highest standards for healthy cooking as titanium's enhanced resistance to corrosion assures that taste-altering metal ions are not emitted into foods.

Maintenance

Titanium cookware is quite expensive and requires exceptional maintenance. Titanium is remarkably heat responsive, and therefore titanium skillets do not involve preheating, but need low heat to cook. For this reason, these utensils are unsuitable for oven use. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or metal scouring pads when cleaning up the cookware. It is best to use liquid dish detergents and soft sponges to clean the titanium pans.

Use minimal oil when cooking, to avoid burning. If scorched or burned-on foods are difficult to loosen, put water in the skillet and boil. Then clean with a high-quality liquid detergent using nylon scouring pad that offer rubbing power without scratching the surface.

Boiling water in titanium pans after cleaning regenerates the TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide or Titania) layer. This antibacterial coating restores itself when it comes in contact with air or water. Placing the titanium cookware in sunlight or ultraviolet source promotes the photo-catalysis properties of titanium and ensures a cleaner surface.
